"Chariot of Apollo, Study 1, Versailles, France" (1988) by Michael Kenna

Photography has always been a passion of mine and being able to experience beauty that it encompasses is surreal. When it comes to Michael Kenna, I especially love the tone that he sets with each of his photographs. He shoots in black and white film allowing the light and darkness to add a dramatic effect to the viewer that the image might not have if it were in color. The photograph is called "Chariot of Apollo, Study 1, Versailles, France" and knowing the title allows the viewer a more inside look. Historically in Greek culture, Apollo was the god of the sun and light, in contrast, the photo is in a gradient of grey adding a somber feeling to the meaning of the image. While the reflection in the water and the trees add a tranquil effect to the photograph, the statue itself contrasts the peace of the photo to make the viewer believe that there is a deeper meaning of turmoil. Once again, the tone adds both depth and distance. The statue itself within the photograph is made mostly of lighter shades compared to back ground making the viewers eyes draw to them as the center piece.

  1. Hello Juliana! I totally agree that this art is impressive! The black and white reminds me of Monochrome. Thank you for sharing!
